Health Warning Information

Health Effects

Ingestion: Causes a burning sensation in the mouth and stomach, nausea, vomiting and salvation. Minute amounts aspirated into the lungs can produce a severe hemorrhagic pneumonia, with severe pulmonary injury or death.

Eyes: Vapours cause eyes irritation. Splashes cause severe irritation, possible corneal burns and eye damage.

Skin: Skin contact results in loss of natural oils and often results in a characteristic dermatitis. May be absorbed through the skin.

Inhalation:Inhalation of vapours may be irritating to the nose & throat. Inhalation of high concentrations may result in nausea, vomiting, headache, ringing in the ears & severe breathing difficulties which may be delayed in onset. Substantial pain, cough & hoarseness are also reported. High vapour concentrations are anesthetic & central nervous system depressants.
Chronic Inhalation: Can cause headache, loss of appetite, nervousness and pale skin. Repeated or prolonged skin contact may cause a skin rash.
Repeated exposure of the eyes to high concentrations of vapour may cause reversible damage.
Repeated exposure can damage bone marrow, causing low blood cell count. May damage liver & kidneys.

First Aid

Swallowed : If swallowed do not induce vomiting, give water and seek medical advise immediately.

Eye : Hold eyes open and flood with plenty of water for about 15 minutes. Seek medical advise immediately.

Skin : Remove contaminated clothing and wash also wash affected areas with large amounts of soap and water.

Inhalation : Remove affected person from contaminated area, and URGENTLY seek medical advise. If not breathing, administer artificial respiration.

Advice to Doctor

Treat Symptomatically.

Precautions in Use

It is important to wear protective clothing at all times.
Fire risk and explosion factor is high, important to ensure that material is not exposed to any kind of ignition sources.
Insure that the area worked on is fully ventilated.
Personal Respirators are recommended.

Ventilation

Local exhaust ventilation required.

Personal Protection

Personal Respirators: For conditions of use where exposure to the substance is apparent, consult an industrial hygienist. For emergencies or instances where exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive pressure, air-supplied respirator.
Warning: Air purifying respirators do not protect workers in oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Wear impervious protective clothing, including boots, gloves, lab coat, apron or coveralls, as appropriate means to prevent skin contact.
Use Chemical safety goggles and or a full face shield where splashing is possible. Maintain eye wash fountain & quick-drench facilities in work area.

Safe Handling Information

Storage and Transport

Store in a cool dry well ventilated location, away from any area where a fire hazard may be acute. Outside or detached storage is preferred. Keep separate from oxidizing materials. Containers should be bonded & grounded for transfers to avoid static sparks. Storage and use areas should be NO SMOKING. Containers of this material may be hazardous when empty as they retain product residues (vapours, liquid): observe all warnings and precautions listed for the product.
Storage Precautions: Store away from ignition sources, foodstuffs and clothing. Keep containers sealed completely when not in use. Take precautions against static electricity discharges.

Ship: Name (CSN): XYLENE/XYLOL.

Spills and Disposal

Spills: Ventilate area of leak or spill. Remove all sources of ignition. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Isolate hazard area. Keep unnecessary personal from entering. Contain and re-cover liquid where possible. Use non-sparking tools and equipment. Collect liquid in an appropriate container or absorb with an inert material,
(EG vermiculite, dry sand or earth), and place in a chemical waste container. Do not use combustible material such as sawdust.
Follow state or local authority regulations and guidelines for the disposal of the waste.
Clean area with detergent and water- do not allow product to enter drains, sewers or waterways- inform the local authorities if this occurs.

ECO TOXICITY
Following data for Xylene: When released into the soil: This material may evaporate to a moderate extent, it is expected to leach into groundwater. Further, material may biodegrade to a moderate extent.
When released into water: This material may evaporate to a moderate extent, may biodegrade to a moderate extent.
When released into air: This material may be moderately degraded by reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals. exposed to air this material is expected to have a half-life of less than 1 day. This material is not expected to significantly bio accumulate, (mixed Xylene: octanol/water partition coefficient 3.1-3.2:bio concentration factor = 1.3; eels,)

INCOMPATIBILITIES:
Strong oxidizing agents and strong acids.
Conditions to avoid: Heat, flames, ignition sources and incompatibles.

Fire / Explosion Hazard

Explosion: Above flash point, vapour-air mixes are explosive within flammable limits noted above. Vapours can flow along surfaces to distant ignition source and flash back.
Contact with strong oxidizers may cause fire. Sensitive to static discharge.
Fire Extinguishing Media: Dry chemical, foam or carbon dioxide. Water spray may be used to keep fire exposed containers cool.
Special Information: In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH- approved. Self-contained breathing apparatus with full face operated in the "Pressure demand" or other "Positive pressure mode."
Hazchem Code: 3[Y].
